Why do I need a marketing plan?

In a CoSchedule Survey, it was found that organizations who had a documented marketing plan or strategy were over
3x more likely to succeed that those who did not.

If 50% of businesses fail in the first 5 years, you want to give your business the best chance of success…
a 3x higher likelihood by having an actual plan of action is a great start!

Over 40% of business owners believe that marketing strategy and planning are the most time-consuming activities

So makes sense that 42% are most likley to procrastinate on creating a cohesive strategy or documented plan

And they are not wrong. It can be extremely complicated, which is why I spent the past year and a half working to make a system that was quick, painless, simple…maybe even fun?

But creating a Marketing Plan is so time-consuming…

I know exactly where you are: full of exciting ideas but getting conflicting directions, as “gurus” share “secret - I can’t believe I’m giving this away” advice on SEO or Facebook Ads… It’s hard to even know where to start!

When I started my skincare business in 2019, I didn’t have a marketing plan…and I worked in Marketing…oops.

When I started Cloud, I was the Director of Strategy for an agency in Los Angeles that worked with Fortune 500 brands…I did digital markeitng strategy and didn’t have a real strategy of my own…

Why? Because I didn’t set aside the time to do it! I was so focused on product development and sales (sound familiar?)

And that worked for awhile. Until one day I realized that I didn’t have a plan, I was just flying by the seat of my pants.

By then, it was too late. My business failed.

I actually did quite well because I had many years in marketing and launching brands, so I had an idea of what I was doing without a plan…but I was still just “throwing things against the wall to see if they stick.”

And I won’t say my business failed due to not having the actual plan.

It failed because it was 2020. The stores closed, my events were cancelled, sales dwindled (as I had positioned the brand for “women on the go” and quite frankly, no one was going anywhere.)

But, I had only given myself that 32% shot at winning. If I’d had a plan, maybe I could have given myself that 313% more potential of success.

The pandemic was an act of God if there ever was one (or the universe, or Xenu or whatever you believe, it’s fine by me) but new businesses fail ALL THE TIME (50% fail in the first 5 years!) so having a strategic, actionable, easy to manage marketing plan can give you the edge in a post-pandemic world to avoid the pitfall I (and many others) have fallen into: lack of a real plan.

After my business failed (as did my relationship), I packed up and moved back east where I got a job running marketing for a tech company. I collected my paycheck and did my 9-5…and then I got bored.

So I started mentoring startups for a local organization (shout out to Launch CLT!) and helped with a workshop that outlined starting a businesses (focused on market research and planning). I started to come up with acronyms and models that made it easier for me to teach and was told by a few people I should start teaching more.

But I had a full-time job.

So tinkered around with it and shared it with mentees when I could.

I realized if I wanted to reach more people, I’d need to make it into a course that multiple founders could take together…because there was only one me.

Early 2023, I left my full-time job to pursue fractional CMO work and advising. This freed up time for me to write the book I’d been planning to write for years and to finally get to work on the course.

One belief I hold dear is the one of Dharma from the Sanskrit root meaning “to uphold, support, bear” and outlined by Jay Shetty in his book Think Like a Monk as a sort of life calling:

Dharma, he says, represents a person’s calling. He explains that dharma is using your natural inclinations – what you thrive at – to serve others. “You should feel passion when the process is pleasing and your execution is skillful”

I realized I felt the most passion and excitement when I was teaching others ways to improve their lives in the way I knew how. It was a sort of Venn diagram of passion, skill, compassion, and usefulness that led to me to put aside my fear of putting myself back out there and release OWMS.

“Do I have to do the course during the weekend?”

Not at all!

I created the One Weekend Marketing Strategy (OWMS) with new entrepreneurs in mind - those who might still be grinding at their 9-5 and have to work on their new business in their spare time.

However, there are many full-time entrepreneurs, long-term solopreneurs, and mid-size business owners and marketing directors OWMS is perfect for!

The Course has been sectioned into 2 main Sessions - plus a Bonus 3rd Session to finalize your strategy into a 14-page Marketing Plan document - and each Session is broken down into 2-3 Modules making it easy to break up the course into bite-size pieces or cruise through it in a few hours across three days.

I recommend setting aside 5 hours per session, making the full course - including the bonus session - around 15 hours.
